State Registration for Massage Therapists Becomes Law on July 1, 2008

SB 219 successfully made it through the legislature on May 5, 2008 and Governor Bill Ritter signed the bill into law on June 2, 2008. This signing has been the culmination of three years effort by AMTA and ABMP. We have worked with our membership, with schools, communities and legislators to achieve this goal that was first attempted in 1990.

Colorado becomes the 39th state to regulate massage therapists. In order to get our legislation passed, it was changed from a licensing act to a mandatory registration act. Therapists have been asking what this change means.

The law goes into effect on July 1, 2008 and the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) will develop rules and applications between July 2008 and March 2009. We expect that applications will be available in April 2009. We will keep you posted.

As the rules are developed further, more information will be posted here on the AMTA Web site, in our newsletter and mailings.
