Position statements for 2011 are now posted below for your review and consideration.

Remember: a position statement, if adopted, is a statement that will be accessible to media and the general public about where the AMTA and its members stand on specific issues related to the profession of massage therapy. Although position statements, at first glance, appear to be true, great care needs to be taken to make sure that they are accurate. They must have solid research data to back them up, including timely data that covers a large sector of participants and is relevant to the position statement.  They must also be grammatically correct with no spelling errors.

 In order to best represent the viewpoint of Colorado members at the National Convention this October, your Chapter Delegates are interested in hearing your observations and opinions concerning this year’s statements. We will soon be sending out a survey, so please take some time to visit the Delegate Corner on our Chapter website at and familiarize yourself with the contents.

An Associate Faculty member at the distinguished Boulder College of Massage Therapy in Boulder, Colorado, Michelle teaches Kinesthetic Anatomy in both the basic and advanced studies programs. She specializes in using the Zahourek system of Anatomy in ClayÒ, building muscles in clay on a ¾ scale model of the human skeleton in combination with the art of palpation.

Michelle’s first serious study of human anatomy began as a fine arts student at the University of Northern Colorado. Eventually, this led her to a career in the healing arts.  Today, she is a nationally certified massage therapist with over fifteen years experience helping people understand and befriend their bodies.

First joining AMTA as a student member, Michelle became a Professional Member upon graduating and has remained active since beginning her practice in 1996. She has volunteered for AMTA at the State Capitol, donating chair massage on many occasions for “Massage Therapy Awareness Day”. Currently, she is excited to renew her role as a Chapter Delegate for 2011, mentoring new Delegates and representing the membership at the 2011 National Convention.

GEORGE GLASS:  A brief bio

In the Past

George owned a private practice, Mountain Massage by George, for 18 years in Vermont.  He also owned and operated a cooperative health care center, Mountain Healing Arts, for ten years in Manchester Center, Vermont.  He sold both the health care center and his practice this past October to “live the good life” in Durango.  George’s volunteer life began with the Vermont chapter in 1993 as Sports Massage Chair and continued to develop through positions as 1^st V.P., President, New England Conference Planning Committee Member, Vermont Chapter Delegate and Treasurer.  George also spent time nationally on the AMTA Sports Massage Education Council/Committee & Team and volunteering for the National Certification Board Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

Currently

George has taken a position with ARIA Therapeutics & Wellness, based in Mercy Medical Center and Integrative Physical Therapy, in Durango.  In addition to working within a medical based practice George is putting the finishing touches on an updated teaching manual for Event Sports Massage, something he has been teaching for over 15 years.  He has taken on the position of Delegate for the Colorado Chapter, AMTA and jumped onto the Event Sports Massage Team.  “I am looking forward to being involved with the chapter in both capacities and also look forward to working with some longtime friends and meeting new folks here in Colorado.”  George spends as much time as possible being with his wife Lori Ann (Also a Massage Therapist), and daughters, Ayana (6) and Giselle (3).  They enjoy biking, skiing, hiking, swimming, soccer, bouldering and anything else that has them playing outdoors.

Yeah I know- IT’S ABOUT TIME!!

I, Shelly Herberholz, was born and raised in North Dakota. I graduated from Colorado Institute of Massage Therapy over 12 years ago. I enjoy working full time as a massage therapist in Colorado Springs. I have been to several chapter meetings and National AMTA conventions over those years. But have never been a volunteer of any sort at the chapter or national level. So after 12 years - I raised my hand and said YES! I want to be a delegate. I was at the National Convention when one of the 1^st position statements was voted on and approved. WOW!! The excitement pouring out of that room – memorable!  I want to be a delegate to help change the world’s negative perception of massage to a positive one. To be part of a group that stands behind what we do as therapists, making position statements and recommendations for the AMTA.
